Making Medications More Effective
Psychiatric Genetic Testing
for California Residents
If you are struggling with medications for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety or ADHD, you are not alone. We know the process of finding medications that work can be frustrating, time-consuming and debilitating. Fewer than 50% of individuals with depression respond to their first medication. That is why we offer genetic testing for psychiatric medication optimization for California residents. It’s a simple and easy way of helping select the best medications for each client.
How Genetic Testing Works
for Medication Management
Analyzing DNA to Optimize Medications
Genetic testing—often called pharmacogenetic or pharmacogenomic testing—is becoming an increasingly useful tool in psychiatric medication management. These tests analyze variations in a person’s DNA that affect how they metabolize or respond to psychiatric medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers. By identifying these genetic patterns before starting treatment, clinicians can make more informed choices about medication selection and dosing. The goal is to help clinicians tailor treatments more precisely, potentially improving effectiveness and reducing unwanted side effects.

The Psychiatric Genetic Testing Process
Genetic testing for psychiatric medication management is generally simple, non-invasive, and quick. It can be done in-office or via the mail or delivery service. That is how we are able to offer this service to all residents of California. Here’s how it is typically administered:
Sample Collection
Most pharmacogenetic tests use a cheek swab (buccal swab): A cotton swab is rubbed along the inside of your cheek for 20–60 seconds to collect cells. Some use a saliva sample: You spit into a small collection tube. Less commonly, a blood sample may be used, but this is usually only in hospital or specialized settings.
Laboratory Processing
The sample is sent to a certified laboratory, where technicians analyze specific genes involved in drug metabolism (e.g., CYP450 enzymes), drug transport and receptor sensitivity. These genes influence how your body processes psychiatric medications.
Results Report
The lab generates a report that typically categorizes medications into groups such as “use as directed,” “use with caution,” or “significant gene-drug interaction.” It also notes whether you are likely to metabolize certain drugs slowly, normally, or quickly. And it highlights potential dosing considerations for clinicians. Clinicians — not the test—make the dosing decisions.
Clinical Interpretation and Treatment Plan
A healthcare provider reviews the results with you. Genetic testing does not diagnose conditions or guarantee a specific medication will work, but it helps narrow medication choices, reduce trial-and-error prescribing, flag medications more likely to cause side effects. The clinician uses results as one piece of information—alongside symptoms, history, and other factors—to adjust or select medications.
